Back in 1971, Nobel Prize winning economist Herbert Simon wrote:

“What information consumes is rather obvious. It consumes the attention of its recipients. Hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention.”

That was in 1971… here are a list of the best inventions of 1971

  • The dot-matrix printer
  • The food processor
  • The liquid-crystal display (LCD)
  • The microprocessor
  • VCR or videocassette
  • Email

Herbert was pointing this out years before: cell phones, text messaging, AOL, instant messaging, snapchat, twitter, instagram, redditt, 24 hour news.. the list goes on.

I knew too much when I was younger. Now that I’m older, I have the same problem. But, the thing that most expands leadership is the belief that we don’t know.

Those who think they know are worse off than those who know they don’t.

Do you want to find people their dream job and help your company grow?

The truth is recruiting is sales. It is cold calling. It is convincing others that you are who they need to be talking to and you are the right connection. It is always having your phone on and ready to walk someone off of a client site. Recruiting is focusing on someone’s needs and finding the best fit. It is holding adults hands and helping them make grown up decisions.

Recruiting to me in 5 words: calls, convincing, questioning, verifying, leads.

These are just a few questions you should ask yourself.

  • Are you a great networker- do you know where people fit? Can you anticipate where they might be headed?
  • Are you curious and do you ask great questions… actually listening to the answer?
  • Can you tell someone “no”? Even when they are crying? 
  • Do you build great relationships? 
  • Are you comfortable with overcoming challenges daily?

How to Become a Recruiter: Get your foot in the door with an agency and learn how to recruit. It will be hard to get your footing at first, however, it will teach you how to recruit and deal with adversity. Then you can decide what career path to take. Average job tenure at an agency for a new recruiter is less than 6 months. But stick it out and become a recruiter who has learned how to deal with the atmosphere. Don’t be a recruiter who passes on candidates with job tenure issues when you are unable to last anywhere. Get two years and then you will have a great idea if this is for you.

Complicated DrawingWe tend to over-complicate things in life, and when it comes to defining what successful leadership looks like, we  really really , over-complicate it. Much of what constitutes leadership success comes down to common sense, but unfortunately it’s not always common practice.

Searching the shelves of your local bookstore (do those still exist?) or doing a search on Amazon.com would lead you to believe that to be a successful leader you’ll need to discover the keys, take the right steps, obey the laws, figure out the dysfunctions, embrace the challenge, ascend the levels, look within yourself, look outside yourself, form a tribe, develop the right habits, know the rules, break the rules, be obsessed, take control, let go of control, learn the new science, or discover the ancient wisdom. Did I say we like to over-complicate things?

Why I Am Passionate About Our Veterans

In May of 2012, I attended the Wounded Warrior Courage awards and dinner. I was flown up to New York City, stayed at the W in Manhattan and put on a tux for the gala across the street at the Waldorf Astoria.  The evening was emceed by Bob Costas, there were athletes, coaches and dignitaries. It was an amazing night to honor many of those who have persevered and those who help our wounded veterans. It was inspiring to see wounded veterans rising up and doing great things.

But, to this day, one thing sticks out in my memory from that night that inspires me to help our veterans.  It was shocking and left many mouths agape in the auditorium.  It was the suicide rate of our veterans. In January, it was reported that male veterans under 30 saw a 44 percent increase in the rate of suicides. As it stands now, 22 veterans take their lives each day.

Speechless. The Huffington Post reported that in 2012, we had more active duty suicides then combat deaths in Afghanistan.

There is good news; veterans who seek assistance through the VA have seen a decrease in suicide rates. The goal is now to expand the outreach and make sure our veterans are aware and using the services available to them.
